Matthew R. Pahl is a partner with Cooksey, Toolen, Gage, Duffy & Woog based in Orange County. Primarily a civil defense litigator, he handles a wide variety of business cases, including commercial and business defense, insurance coverage, land use, corporate liability assessment, trade secret misappropriation, and trademark violation. He has has extensive experience in handling complex, multi-party litigation—including mass tort and class action cases involving owners and managers of mobilehome parks, apartments, and hotel/motels.
Mr. Pahl is also a successful appellate attorney. He has briefed and argued over two dozen appeals before the California Courts of Appeal. Published opinions for cases in which he has prevailed include Bevis v. Terrace View Partners, LP (2019) 33 Cal.App.5th 230 and Schermer v. Tatum (2016) 245 Cal.App.4th 912. Mr. Pahl was presented with the CMPA “Advocacy Fighter” Award during their 2019 Symposium as a result of the victory in Bevis.

- Shumake v. Schwam – Won affirmance of summary judgment against attorney attempting to enforce lien.
- Schermer v. Tatum – Won affirmance of precertification order dismissing class action claims against multiple business entities.
- Bevis v. Terrace View Partners, LP – Obtained complete reversal of $60 million judgment against mobile home park operator.
- Kingsland Investment, LLC v. Tanriverde – Won affirmance of summary judgment on behalf of developer that cancelled a real property sales contract.
- Kurgan v. Hamrick – Won affirmance of award of costs with partially modified judgment.
